New Book Alerts.

This page will be updated from time to time as I learn about books that are now available for purchase. I'll be covering everything from new editions of classic works to brand new books on the subject. The information on this page is arranged by the date of the announcement, with the most current news at the top of the list. Please note that these New Book Alerts are announcements, and not necessarily recommendations. The goal of this page is to list every Titanic related title that becomes available, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Often, there will be an indication of my opinion of the book, but that is my opinion exclusively.

Titles that are listed below are in-print and available for purchase, or at least they were when the book alert was originally posted. Up-coming titles or books not yet available will not be covered on this page. To see news of books that may be in the works, check out the Upcoming Book News page. Whenever possible I will note on that page when the book is supposed to be ready for sale. Due to the vagaries of the publishing business, any estimates on availability must be considered approximate at best, which is why books not yet available for sale will not be included on this page.

Titanic Hearts, by Ned & Dru Schillow.
This is a softcover book with 96 pages, written for a fifth grade audience. This fictional story describes the way many Americans reached out, as well as an exciting glimpse at some true events in small town America in the early 1900s. One of the authors, Dru, has been an avid Titanic book collector for many years, and has one of the most extensive collections I am aware of. This book depicts life in the early 1900's in small town, U.S.A. Many of the adventures of the Shaffer children on the farm, and the stories about many of those on the Titanic are historically accurate. The fictional blending of the two provides an enjoyable read for children of all ages.

The price of the book is $8.50.

Copies signed by the authors are available. E-mail them at [email protected].
Or they can be ordered directly from the publisher Xlibris on the Schillow's page.

White Star Line, a Photographic History
, by Janette McCutcheon.
Originally due out in April, 2005, we have been waiting a long time for this title. But the wait is over. As one would probably guess, this is a photographic journey of the ships that made the White Star Line one of the most influental and sometimes disasterous shipping lines of all time.

This is a 96 page, softcover book. It was published by Tempus Publishing. For those in the UK and points east, it is for sale on Amazon.com UK for £13.19; it is also for sale on Amazon's US site for $26.40, although both sites describe a wait of 3 to 6 weeks to order. If you want it faster, I recommend contacting Tempus, although you will have to ask for it directly as the title is not available on their webpage at the time of this notification.

The Rescue of the Third Class on the Titanic: A Revisionist History
, by David Gleicher.
Publisher’s synopsis: Almost a century after the fact, the story of Titanic continues to fascinate all those interested in marine history. One of the mysteries that has gone unexplained until now is why such a disproportionate number of Third Class passengers perished with the vessel. David Gleicher, who has published widely on Titanic and its passengers, has now solved the riddle in this new book. At once both scholarly and readable, this book is sure to find an important place on the bookshelves of all those interested in the topic.

This is a softcover book, with roughly 300 pages; which includes tables, illustrations and a bibliography. The price of the book is US$25 + US$5 (shipping and handling). It can be ordered by phone: 709-737-2602, or by email: [email protected].

Titanic and the Mystery Ship
, by Senan Molony.
This book was first published privately by the author in 2002 with the title A Ship Accused. Tempus Publishing has just released a completely revised, reedited and somewhat expanded edition, with this new title. Like the original, this is a no holds barred critique of how the Californian could not have been the elusive “mystery ship” that was seen from the decks of the Titanic as she was sinking.

It is a softcover book with 352 pages and 84 illustrations. Titanic and the Mystery Ship can be ordered directly from Tempus' website. The cost for the book is £16.99.

In essence this new book can be considered a revised and expanded edition of his earlier book Lost Liners. The retail price of the book is $29.95. It can be ordered at all the usual on-line new book sites, and likely at any major bookstore near you.

Titanic: Monument and Warning
by Dave Gittins.
This is not a book, but a cd-rom. This work is being advertised as the first major re-examination of Lord Mersey's British inquiry, but there is much more to the text than that. There are six chapters on the story of the Titanic herself and the maiden voyage. Two chapters cover the US Senate investigation, four cover the British inquiry. There is a chapter on the Californian. Further chapters cover the futures of those involved, a chapter on Titanic's supposed effect on maritime safety, and a chapter on debunking legends and myths.

The cd-rom can be read by Windows computers only at this time. The cost, including shipping worldwide, is $40 Australian. Gittins, who lives in Australia, has set up a PayPal account to make ordering the cd from elsewhere easier. Here is the link to order Titanic, Monument & Warning on his website. See Gittins' Author Page for further details.

The Titanic Diaries
by Anthony John Cunningham.
Although called The Titanic Diaries, that shipwreck is but one chapter in what is essentially an anthology of episodes about people who have survived various maritime disasters. According to the publisher, it is an insightful collection of tales which touch on an aspect of shipwrecks that is often overlooked - that of the survivors themselves. They are the people that tell their stories here - all tales of overcoming adversity and personal loss and living and moving on in the aftermath.

Note that he book can also be found on-line under two alternate titles, which were being considered before it was published, Orphans of the Titanic and Saved from the Titanic. Both of these alternate titles ended up not being used; the only available version is The Titanic Diaries. With thanks to the author for clearing up this issue for me.

This is a softcover book with 128 pages. The retail price is £15.99. It is not available, as far as I can tell, on US sites. Here is a link to The Titanic Diaries on Amazon.com UK.

Titanic Lessons for IT Projects
by Mark Kozak-Holland.
In his first book, the author’s primary topic was how modern executives could avoid making bad decisions. He used the Titanic disaster as examples of how bad decisions were made in 1912. In this new title, he apparently switches that around, this time focusing on the Titanic disaster as the primary subject, then showing how to avoid similar mistakes in today’s world. As such, there is apparently a lot more Titanic content in this one than was found in his first work.

This is a softcover book with 160 pages. The retail price for the book is $27.96. There are also eBook downloadable versions available for $17.95. For further details, see the Titanic Lessons page on the publisher's website.

The Titanic: Lost Words
by Senan Molony.
As of this morning I have been informed by the publisher that the British edition was published this past monday. Amazon.com UK has not updated their site yet, and don't try finding the book under the author's name as it isn't listed. Search for "Titanic Lost Words". Better yet, order it directly from the publisher, ticktock Media. They don't have a website, but their phone number is 01892 509400, and their Fax number is 01892 509401. The retail price for this edition, which is softcover, is £5.99.

The Titanic: A Primary Source History: In Their Own Words
by Senan Molony.
This is a hardcover nonfiction children's book with 48pp. It is a beautifully illustrated work with images on most pages in color and black & white. The text covers the entire story in quick, but thorough detail, augmented by original accounts with quotes, letters and speeches from survivors, and newspaper articles. The style of the writing is journalistic with a refreshing just the facts approach. Content is excellent.

This version is the American edition. The British version, which is a softcover binding, was supposed to be out first under the title Titanic, Lost Words, but as far as I can tell, that edition is not published yet. The American edition is available now. The retail price is $26.00. Note that though Amazon lists this edition as softcover, that is an error, it is definitely a hardback. Here is a link to A Primary Source History on that website.

by Rod Green.
This is a hardcover book, with 160 pages. Currently only the British edition is available for ordering. If you don't want to pay the overseas charges, an American edition will be out in the Fall of this year.

According to the publisher's synopsis: "This book, takes the story of the ship right back to the beginning, to the decision to build it in the first place. From there we go into the shipyard, where 4,000 tradesmen - joiners, fitters, electricians, plumbers, welders, riveters and many more - rivet by rivet, plate by plate, turned those plans and blueprints into a towering hulk of an ocean liner. An extraordinary story of modern engineering and also of human endeavour and, ultimately, fallibility. Illustrated throughout with blueprints, cross-sections and haunting photographs of the Titanic in construction."

Finding Dorothy. An Appreciation of the Life and Career of Dorothy Gibson Brulatour
by Randy Bryan Bigham, edited by Jennifer Mills.
Finding Dorothy is the first biography of model and actress Dorothy Gibson (1889-1946), who also found notoriety as a survivor of the Titanic tragedy.

This book provides a thorough analysis of Dorothy’s work as the muse of popular Edwardian artist Harrison Fisher. It also offers an informed critique of her successful but brief career as a leading lady in early American silent cinema. Reviews for each of her movies, drawing upon all available documented sources, are included.

This is a soft cover book in magazine format with 96 pages. Note only the first 150 copies came with the two art prints and the cd-rom. All further copies will include just the book itself. A significant percentage of proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the British Titanic Society and the Fort Lee Film Commission. For further details, see Bigham's Author Page.

The price will be $34.99. For now, the book can only be ordered through Amazon.com. Here is the link to Finding Dorothy on that site.

Titanic
by Kathleen Fahey.
A new children's book for the 9 to 12 age group. This is a short hardcover book, with 32 pages. Don't have too many details yet. The list price is $24.67. Here is a link to Fahey's Titanic on Amazon.com's website. A word of caution if you go hunting for a copy yourself, not all sites are pulling up the book under the author's name for some reason. Best way to search for the book is by the ISBN number: 0836844998.

Samson's Titanic Journey
by Lauren Graham.
This charming children's book tells the story of a mouse that takes the maiden voyage and has many adventures. The highlight is definitely the illustrations by Roisin Mathews, which are just splendid. I believe it is a softcover book with 32 pages, illustrated throughout. It was published late in 2004 by a small press in Northern Ireland, but I was able to find a web page from which it can be ordered. The retail price is £4.99. Here is the link to order Samson's Titanic Journey. It is the second book down the page at the time of this posting.

Le S/S Nomadic, Petit Frére du Titanic (Little Brother to Titanic) by Fabrice Vanhoutte & Philippe Mélia.
Although Titanic Book Site.com specializes in books in the English language on the disaster, we are always happy to lend a hand with notifications about new titles in other languages when we hear about them. This book tells the story of the tender that ferried first and second class passengers out to Olympic and Titanic from Cherbourg. Nomadic is the last White Star Line vessel still afloat, although its future is very much in doubt.

It is an oversized softcover book with 136 pages and a whopping 250 illustrations. Initial print run is limited to 1,000 copies. The text is in French. It can be ordered on Amazon.com's French language site. The retail price is 25 Euros (roughly $34.00 in American dollars). Here is the link to order S/S Nomadic on Amazon.com.fr. If you need help with ordering, here is the link that explains how to do so in English.
